Sioux Falls’ Collaborative Efforts to Address Homelessness

Sioux Falls is actively addressing the complex challenge of homelessness through a collaborative approach that emphasizes prevention and compassionate response. While Minnehaha County holds primary responsibility for assisting those experiencing homelessness, the City of Sioux Falls plays a significant role by partnering with various organizations to provide comprehensive support.

Collaborative Initiatives

The city’s strategy involves working closely with Minnehaha County, the State of South Dakota, nonprofit organizations, faith communities, businesses, and the public. This collective effort aims to address the root causes of homelessness and connect individuals with necessary resources. Notably, the city has contracted with South Dakota Urban Indian Health to offer street outreach services, proactively engaging with individuals to assist with housing, food, medical care, and other needs.

Preventive Measures

Preventing homelessness is a key focus for Sioux Falls. The city has been instrumental in increasing the supply of affordable housing. In 2024, efforts led to the completion of 75 new affordable housing units and the rehabilitation of 138 units. Plans for 2025 include collaborating with partners to develop 377 new units and rehabilitate 45 more, aiming to provide safe and stable housing to prevent individuals and families from becoming homeless.

Understanding the Issue

To effectively address homelessness, the city participates in the annual Point in Time Count, which offers a snapshot of the current situation. In early 2025, 625 individuals experiencing homelessness were counted in Sioux Falls. This data helps track trends and informs the development of targeted interventions.

Compassionate Response to Encampments

When encampments are identified on city property or public spaces, Sioux Falls follows a compassionate process that includes clear communication with individuals about available housing and shelter options, collaboration with outreach workers and service providers, allowing adequate time for individuals to gather belongings, providing information about additional resources, and offering transportation assistance when needed. This approach reflects the city’s commitment to treating all community members with respect while maintaining safe public spaces.

Community Engagement

Community members are encouraged to support efforts to address homelessness by volunteering or donating to established service organizations. The city emphasizes that cash handouts may not be the most effective way to help and suggests alternative methods of support.

Through these collaborative and compassionate efforts, Sioux Falls aims to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those experiencing homelessness, fostering a community where all residents have access to safe and stable housing.
